Commercially Licensed Content from KVH Media Group

Merchant vessels are commercial environments that must ensure copyrighted materials are licensed for onboard viewing. With IP-MobileCast, all entertainment content is provided by KVH Media Group, a leading provider of licensed content including Hollywood films, popular television series, and more.

Content Delivery with Advanced Technology

Multicasting technology – a technique for one-to-many communications over an IP infrastructure – is the key to KVH’s IP-MobileCast content delivery service. Large multimedia and data files are delivered over the top (OTT) of KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadband network without affecting the vessel’s data plan or onboard data speeds.

Patented technology and innovative design enable rich content delivery

Multicasting technology is a technique for one-to-many communications over an IP infrastructure and is the driving force behind KVH’s new IP-MobileCast service. IP-MobileCast service uses proprietary software that provides advanced error correction, compression, and validation of data integrity throughout the transmission from shore to ship for unparalleled reliability and efficiency. Shoreside servers encode files for transmission and queue them for multicast delivery “over the top” of the mini-VSAT Broadband network. The IP-MobileCast service’s patented Forward Error Correction (FEC) technology ensures that the CommBox servers on ships receive each file in perfect condition the first time it is transmitted. The unique FEC algorithms deliver the highest level of file reliability by accommodating intermittent non-continuous transmission, which might happen when large transmissions are interrupted by prioritized network traffic or in very poor weather conditions.

The file is transmitted once, and is received by every vessel in the satellite footprint. If the vessel has subscribed to that particular content, the data is stored and decoded using rights management software on the CommBox, and then made available on the onboard server. Normal mini-VSAT Broadband ship-to-shore and shore-to-ship transmissions will be prioritized over the IP-MobileCast service and are completely unaffected in terms of speed or added airtime cost.

The innovative design of the mini-VSAT Broadband network and the Integrated CommBox Modem (ICM), which is built into every TracPhone V3IP, V7IP, and V11IP, have paved the way for KVH to be the first in the maritime SATCOM industry to offer such a complete suite of multicasting services. Recent VCSM network enhancements enable new bandwidth to be used, and the ICM serves as the hub for receiving IP-MobileCast services, which can then be accessed by any computer, set top box, or media player onboard.
