SatStation Edge Mate Kit - Controller/Router/Interface Solution with Iridium Edge
Iridium Edge
The Irdiium Edge enables you to leverage your existing terrestrial-based solutions for fleet management, telematics, safety and other remote monitoring applications by expanding connectivity beyond cellular limits for 100% global IoT coverage.
Rapidly Deployed IoT Solution
Fast time-to-market is a critical need in today’s evolving asset tracking and fleet management environment. Iridium Edge features an all-in-one Short Burst Data(SBD) modem and antenna, with power supply. The plug-and-play satellite IoT device can be easily paired with existing satellite and cellular solutions, without complicated integration or development requirements.
Benefits of the Iridium LEO Satellite Network for IoT/M2M
Iridium Edge inherits the many benefits of the Iridium network, including:
- 100 percent truly global coverage from pole-to-pole
- Provides a stronger, more robust satellite signal compared to GEO constellations
- Shorter transmission path of LEO network results in lower latency and shorter registration time
- Greater flexibility in installation
- Improved line of sight over GEO systems in compromised locations or behind large obstructions
- Overlapping satellite coverage and crosslinks provide redundancy and increased reliability
Key Markets

SatStation Edge Mate
The SatStation EdgeMate is the ultimate connectivity companion for the Iridium Edge. Customer's looking to easily integrate Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) into their application can turn to the EdgeMate to power the Iridium Edge, control it, and interface with their system via ethernet cable, Wi-Fi, USB, or Can Bus. Iridium Edge has a built in GPS and LTE Modem, making it the ultimate out of the box integration tool. EdgeMate eliminates the time and expense of engineering a solution for the Iridium Edge and allows users to connect their assets to Iridium's truly global network within minutes of opening the box.
Ethernet/Wi-Fi Connectivity
The Iridium Edge has a proprietary serial port as the only external interface. EdgeMate allows for both ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity to the Iridium Edge. This allows modern day computers, tablets, smartphones, and other devices that don't have serial ports to communicate on Iridium's network via the Iridium Edge. The EdgeMate enables any device with Wi-Fi or ethernet to send and receive Iridium SBD through the Iridium Edge.
Eliminates the need for Software Development
No software development skills are required to use the Iridium Edge when paired with an EdgeMate. The Edge Mate comes with the following built-in applications that can be easily access with any web browser.
EdgeMate is preconfigured for the following Tracking and Reporting Platforms:
- GSatTrack
- Nova GAP
The Network Share feature allows a user to easily drop in files from their computer to send over Iridium SBD and receive inbound SBD files.
The Web Form allows the user to type in messages and/or upload files to be sent over Iridium SBD
The System Log offers the user a running report of all internal and external processing done by the EdgeMate.
Simple API
EdgeMate includes a simple API interface allowing developers wanting to create their own SBD applications to access all of the features of the Edge without having to develop special cables or hardware.
Least Cost Routing
EdgeMate comes with built in LTE modem that can be used to send data inexpensively in areas with LTE coverage. It can be set to prioritize LTE and to fail over to Iridium SBD when no LTE data is available. The EdgeMate can be set up to use LTE with SBD failover, LTE only or SBD only. This least cost routing capability allows users to reduce data cost when their asset is in an LTE coverage area.
CAN Bus
EdgeMate comes with 2 CAN buses that can be used to interface to vehicular networks and/or marine NMEA2000 instrumentation networks.
Firewall
EdgeMate has a powerful built-in firewall with intelligent routing that allows users to create profiles based on the active wide area network (Iridium or LTE) and the type of local connection (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, CAN Bus, USB).
Remote Access
Remote support access can be provided to techs to diagnose problems on the Mate and other devices connected to the Mates internal network. This can be accomplished via a number of internet connected methods including the on site techs mobile phone via either WiFi or USB tethering.
And More!
In addition to all of the above connectivity and interface options, EdgeMate can be further customized to meet specific applications. EdgeMate runs on a powerful embedded Linux platform that can easily be used to develop and extend its functionality.

SBD Mailbox Check
Mailbox check is charged when the device sends a 0 byte message to check if there is a message queued at the gateway. These messages are free as long as there is a message queued at the gateway. If the gateway does not have a message queued, there is a $0.05 charge for each check.
SBD Registration
Each device can register on the network once a month. Additional registration events are charged at $0.05 each.
