VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) Satellite Internet

VSAT systems are a two-way satellite ground stations with a reflector (parabolic antenna) that is smaller than 3.8 meters. The majority of modern VSAT systems are either Ku or Ka band systems with reflector sizes ranging from 75 centimeters to 1.2 meter. Larger C band VSAT systems are still used in certain regions. The first VSAT systems were used to transmit narrowband data (e.g., point-of-sale transactions using credit cards, polling or RFID data, or SCADA). Today due to increased satellite power and capacity in orbit and advancements in technology VSAT systems can deliver broadband data, some even rivaling the capabilities of terrestrial communications networks. SatPhoneStore customers are turning more and more to VSAT technology for solutions such as internet at sea, backup communications for disasters and unplanned outages, remote internet and VoIP access, and more.

VSAT technology is used for two-way satellite communications for Internet, data and telephony, typically in rural areas and harsh environments. Normally VSAT solutions in the maritime market are delivered as a package, including satellite space segment, equipment and phone and internet services. Due to the location of the satellites in combination with the movement of vessels, stabilized antennas with tracking are required. A remote maritime VSAT system typically consists of two parts:

  • Above Deck Unit (ADU) - An antenna and transceiver that is placed outdoors (typically inside a dome).
  • Below Deck Unit (BDU) - An indoor unit that interacts with the outdoor unit and controls the antenna.

VSAT technology is used for two-way satellite communications for Internet, data and telephony, typically in rural areas and harsh environments. For reliable, immediate connectivity in the tough conditions experienced in outside broadcasting, homeland security, law enforcement and emergency response, Land VSAT terminals are built for the challenge. News organisations, humanitarian and aid workers, mining and oil & gas companies base their operations on VSAT satellite communication solutions to seamlessly interconnect their businesses. Land VSAT typically comes in one of three types:

  • Fixed - For long-term projects, a fixed solution offers ease of maintenance and less movement of the dish at a lower upfront cost.
  • Fly-Away - Packs down into portable road-cases for ease of transportation.  Available for Ka & Ku Bands
  • Mounted - Install dishes on either a Trailer, Skid or Vehicle Mount for ease of transporation and deployment.
