Inmarsat was set up in 1979 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to develop a satellite communications network for protecting lives at sea and is deeply proud of it's safety heritage.

Inmarsat was the first satellite operator to meet the stringent requirements of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for global safety communications. Today Inmarsat has the world’s most advanced and resilient mobile connectivity infrastructure to ensure that Inmarsat satellite services are not only saving lives but also providing a connectivity lifeline in the most remote and challenging locations.
